Issue Six – Two Weeks of Catchup
A Busy Two Weeks
First order of business, in the name of accountability, I did not post last week. The opportunity/thought had come up a couple of times, but I opted to delay to allow events to play out and add to what I had to write about.
In true life fashion, the delay led to another delay. I knew that if I continued to delay that my self-promised WEEKLY checkin would go another week, which would lead to me having too much to catchup on, loss of details over a longer time span, or, the more likely worst case scenario of me abandoning this project of self fulfilling intentional discovery documenting my journey. So here we are, checking in and catching up on the last two weeks.
The Week Before This Past One
Back in the hustle-bustle of the work/family; first week of navigating summer camp and work schedules and the balance of raising a family and running a growing business.
Drop off girls, go to shop, produce, sell, administrate, pick up girls, go back to shop, Amanda gets off work, picks them up and takes them home, I wrap up work a the shop, pack up the work that can be finished at home, go home, dinner, get everyone to bed, continue working.
It also brings the subject of personal growth.
The idea that has really been hitting lately is looking at the current stage or season of life and acknowledging what can be done around the thing that need to be done and not get discouraged at the rate that things are getting done not matching the idea of how far along I would like things to be while also realizing that things are really (and I mean REALLY) Fucking GREAT!!!
*Cue a moment of gratitude: beautiful and healthy family, roof over our heads, food and drink in our bellies, profitable and life-style advantageous business with clients I enjoy working with, amazing wife with a beneficial career track, supportive friends and family all around.
Last Weekend
Boat Day! Clara experienced her first boat day and it was our first trip out on Drew’s new boat. Our group of six adults and three kids loaded up and headed for the usual Jewfish Key – a sandbar off the backside of a private island where the waters are crystal clear and a variety of boaters gather to relax and enjoy the water.
The water was perfect, the sun was hot, the music choices blaring from other boats was enjoyable, the girls were having the time of their lives, the current was strong, sand dollars and crabs were all around, and Clara flipped some switches on the console that nearly drained the battery almost leaving us stranded. Classic Clara lining up to her ‘Dennis the Menace’ personification.
Drew got the boat started up and we headed for ‘The Pool’ – a house (and the neighboring house) on Longboat Key left in postmortem limbo where we have been granted access to use the pool(s).
Pool time evolved into feeling of hunger and dinner ideas.
DaRuMa – a private-esque table-side show experience
Reservations for nine at 8:30pm were made. We headed across the Intracoastal Waterway to the dock. Rushed home, showered and dressed everyone real quick and ran out the door to dinner.
We got seated at a table towards the back of a half empty dining room and enjoyed the table-side show from our chef Joe as he prepared our meals on the grill in front of us. Clara decided that YumYum sauce was her entrée and used her soup spoon to consume it and mix it with other portions of her meal.
*Note to self – be careful offering to split a meal with drinkers…especially when you aren’t drinking.
The Party of the ‘Generations’
Audrey turned 10. I turned 40 and my grandmother is about to celebrate 90.
My mom threw a party to celebrate the milestone ages. Her Colorado cousins and Cumberland aunt flew in and Sarasota friends and family were in attendance. Good times catching up, conversating, laughing, and enjoying a tasty taco bar prepared by Cici (my mom).
This Past Week – When it rains….IT POURED!
Another busy week of work and juggling Summer Camps down.
After months of NO rain, it rained! It poured! It FLOODED!
It began leaking down the wall and onto the floor of my shop in front of my desk. While moving everything away from the affected area, I turned to see water coming under the front door. The water level was so high that as cars were driving down the road, it was pushing waves of water into the shop.
*Gratitude moment – only the floors and the wall took on water.
The landlord brought over her dehumidifier and has someone coming out to look at the gutters. The gutters are filled with thick vines that are growing all over the building and may be causing an issue with the gutters that is getting water in the building. We’ll see what the verdict is next week. Hopefully, the issue is taken care of effectively.
I was able to get most of the items I was behind on caught up and all of the orders that were due done.
Friday – Birthday Celebrations with Friends
We went over to our friends house and celebrated their birthday with good food, drinks, and company. The girls hung out and played until midnight and then the exhaustion reached its limit and we head home.
Today – A Day Before Father’s Day, Father’s Day
With Audrey going to her father’s tomorrow, we celebrated a day early.
I managed to sleep in until 9:00am. Came out of the shower to a cooked breakfast and gifts (a collection of thoughtful cards, water shoes, a case for my Pixel Pro earbuds, a book on mushrooms that I was interested in reading/studying, and a LEGO Super Mario Bros. Piranha Plant.
Then we headed out to catch the recently released Inside Out 2. Hilarious and on point!
* My Inside Out 2 synopsis – a recently turned teenage girl finding her way through life has ’emotions’ in her head that are tasked with helping her navigate her journey to establishing her identity. The ’emotions’ that were central to the first movie (Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger, and Sadness) are introduced to new emotions that come with puberty (Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Boredom). As Anxiety is known to do, she takes control and creates conflict by trying to protect her host from possible outcomes that haven’t been realized. All the emotions learn their importance in shaping the human they are guiding.
Clara sat through most of the movie. Audrey related to some of the characters. We all enjoyed it!
Yardwork
With no plans for the remainder of the day and a yard needing some attention. I took advantage of the break in rainstorms. went out and started removing some weeds, which led to my doing some weed whacking and edging, and then mowed the yard. Sense of Accomplishment achieved – yard is looking green and maintained.
The End
Ordered and picked up Mattison’s for dinner. Watch Hotel Transylvania 4 with the girls, followed by the new Dr. Who on Disney+. Girls went to bed and I wrote this post.
