The Weekly Checkin – 5/3/2024

First Issue

A few months ago, I subscribed to Tim Ferriss’ “5-Bullet Friday” and really appreciate the format of these weekly updates. I don’t always relate to the information that he includes, but the brief, direct format of current affairs, ponderings, and dabblings appeals to me.

What follows is my weekly version…. “The Weekly Checkin”

<might come up with a catchier name>

Significant Events of the Past Week

  • Clara turned 3! She’s officially figuring out the fun of celebrating birthdays. The family came over for a dinner of Clara’s favorites (Chicken Nuggets, Mac n’ Cheese, and Salad); sang “Happy Birthday” to a very excited little girl who blew out a “3” shaped candle stuck in a Bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes; the excitement continued as she opened her presents and discovered her birthday bounty of clothes and toys (Personalized Bluey Crocs, tee ball Set, soccer ball, and stuffed Cakey are a few of the highlights).
  • The new layout at the Say It With Stitches workshop is working out better than planned! The week before this, I executed a plan to essentially flip the floorplan of my shop. My original idea and intention for keeping the embroidery machines in the window had proved to be pointless over the last three years and I grew increasingly frustrated over walking in circles going from one corner of the shop to the other in the production flow. Now everything is in a place that is much more conducive to the flow of production, the windows are no longer blocked and the space is more open.

New Layout – Another step towards the Company Outfitters vision.

I got a little lost in photos looking for a picture of the previous layout, but essentially it was a mirror image of this, with my desk to the right and the machines in front of the window to the left.

Things I’m Working On

  • Organization and Work flow at the shop – Now that I’ve got a layout that feels amazing, I’m gradually putting the smaller pieces (such as materials and tools) where they naturally make sense. If I go to reach in the same place continuously in search of a specific item, that’s where its new home is….until it makes more sense for it to go somewhere else.
  • Exercise – Amanda and I game planned a time/schedule for me to be able to hit the gym again. The idea is that on specified days, I go get my workout on after work when she gets home. There were a few hiccups that occurred due to the first week of schedule adjustments, but my amazing wife is still committed to giving me the time to work on my health and it felt great to workout again.
  • Sleep – My sleep has been a little out of whack lately, due to increased demand on my bandwidth between work and family (mostly work). The goal is to be in bed (preferably sleeping) by 10:00pm that way i can optimally get my seven to nine hours of sleep. According to my Oura Ring, the trend is improving. I’m also writing this at 12:20am (because I also want to commit to this).

On that note, I think I’ve met the perfect stopping place for this week.

Good night!
